The St. John’s job has only been open for a day and already four Duke names have been mentioned: Bobby Hurley, Tommy Amaker, Jon Scheyer and Nate James.
To be clear, these are media suggestions rather than a peek at A.D. Mike Cragg’s Rolodex but even so, it’s kind of cool.
Hurley’s name has come up a lot obviously. We could see Amaker if he felt like dealing with the fishbowl of New York media (and his wife, who is a sought-after academic, would have a hard time improving her position after being at Harvard).
Of Duke’s current assistants, it doesn’t seem like a great fit for either to us. They’ll both be good coaches whenever they’re ready but having your first head job be the St. John’s job in New York could be a rough way to get started.
Of the four, Hurley is the only one who knows New York and that’s a big deal. Coaching there is not like coaching in other places.
Or maybe not. Here’s Jeff Goodman’s prediction: Ryan Odom.
- Metta World Peace to St. John’s: Hire me
- Coaching search profile: Ryan Odom
- NYC-area coaches: St. John’s should make run at Tim Cluess
