NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-East Regional Practice

Duke and Virginia Tech have played 36 times overall. The current series record is 29-7 favoring Duke.

With three wins in Blacksburg in the last three visits, that means that Virginia Tech has four previous wins. When and where were they?

All of them were in Blacksburg except for one: the year after Sean Dockery’s memorable buzzer beater knocked off Virginia Tech in 2006-07, the Hokies came back to Durham and won 69-67.

Since the teams first played in 1950-51, that’s the only time Virginia Tech has beaten Duke outside of Blacksburg.

The Virginia Tech wins over Duke are:

  • 2019-20 - 77-72
  • 2018-19 - 64-63
  • 2016-17 - 89-75
  • 2010 -11 - 64-60
  • 2006-7 - 69-67
  • 1966-67 - 85-71

Total margin of all seven of Virgina Tech’s victories over Duke: 40 points.

Total margin of road victories, singular: Two points.

Of course none of that means that Friday’s game will conform to the pattern. This is the high point for Virginia Tech basketball to date and Buzz Williams has a major advantage over Duke because he has a vastly more experienced team.

We just thought it was interesting.
