After Zion OMG Williamson blew his shoe out in the first 30 seconds of the UNC game, Nike flew someone into Durham to sit down with Dukedom and discussed what happened.

This article from WTVD has more specific information than we’ve seen anywhere else so you should definitely check it out. Among the revelations:

  1. Williamson wore those particular shoes for three straight games
  2. Duke will stick with Nike
  3. Williamson and his family understand this was a fluke
  4. Williamson will not be sitting out the rest of the season

You have to wonder what the hell happened at Nike shortly after this went down. Not only would they like to have a business relationship with Williams in a few months, they certainly do not want to lose their contract with the flagship program of NCAA basketball.

They also have to be mindful of lawsuits.

Williamson is an exceptionally heavy and powerful player, able to provide levels of torque that few, if any, can equal.

However, that doesn't completely answer why it happened and it certainly doesn’t mean it can’t happen again somewhere else.

And if it does, then people are going to look at the manufacturing and raise questions about a lot of stuff Nike might not want to get into.
