When we heard the horrible news about Jim Boeheim’s traffic accident that cost another man his life, our instinct was that it was, simply, an accident.
The latest news tends to confirm that.
The car that hit the guardrail did so just before Boeheim happened by. It blocked the left two lanes and another car had nearly hit it. The occupants decided to run to safety on the other side of the road, which was unlit.
Boeheim swerved to miss the car and hit Jorge Jiminez, a man who had left Cuba a long time ago and built a life for himself here.
The most striking part of what we now know is this: after the accident, Boeheim stopped.
Remember that he is 74, was alone and in real danger himself.
Boeheim ran back down the highway with his cell phone flashlight to warn other drivers.
We’ve never been huge Boeheim fans honestly but it sounds to us that in a time of immense stress, anxiety and real danger, he showed his true character and behaved admirably. And we don’t discount a 74-year-old man running down the road in February in bad weather either.
He didn't hesitate or calculate or lawyer up. He behaved like a decent man who saw danger and tried to help.
Frankly, based on what we now know, we’re not sure how he could have handled the situation better.
