Furman v Virginia Tech

To us this article is sort of symbolic of some of the problems of college athletics. In a nutshell it’s the Virginia Tech student paper calling for a new football coach.

Specifically it’s calling for a new football coach after the loss to Duke but at this point people should understand that Duke is competitive now and losing to the Blue Devils is not a huge surprise. Duke hung with Clemson for a half last year and Alabama for a quarter this year before being overwhelmed. It’s a smart and well-coached team.

Calling for coaches to be fired...there’s a point where that’s appropriate but even when Jeff Bzdelik was outraging Wake Forest fans we didn’t totally buy it. The school generally knows when to act. Ticket sales are down, donations are down, fans grumble. Trying to drive people out of a job is just not a decent thing to do and shouldn't be done unless absolutely necessary.

Justin Fuentes has been at Virginia Tech for three full seasons and is into his fourth. So far he’s 27-17. It’s not Clemson territory but it’s not awful either.

People will probably be happier after Saturday’s game: after the first half the score is 28-0. So apparently whatever the staff had to say to the team after the Duke game was productive.
