The NBA/China issue has moved into a different phase. LeBron James exercised his own free speech to weigh in with his comments which infuriated a lot of people in Hong Kong who exercised their free speech to burn his jerseys.
Muhammad Ali is no longer with us of course but his ex-wife is coming after James too.
That’s probably not what he had in mind when he spoke out on China and the NBA controversy.
If Christine Brennan’s USA Today column is correct, and it’s too soon to know yet, James may have really lost as much as anyone not directly affected by the protests in Hong Kong. Not money - he’s got plenty of that - but his reputation has taken a serious hit. The next time he takes a stand on a serious issue he’s likely to hear something like....”well, what about Hong Kong?
As far as this issue goes, he says he’s done talking about it.
