Durham’s Jay Huff Is Starting To Make A Difference For Virginia

Virginia has been patient and it’s starting to pay off.

NCAA Basketball: Virginia Tech at Virginia
Jan 15, 2019; Charlottesville, VA, USA; Virginia Cavaliers forward Jay Huff (30) dunks the ball as Virginia Tech Hokies forward P.J. Horne (14) looks on in the second half at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers won 81-59.

Jay Huff had minimal attention coming out of high school, at least partly because he was 7-1 but weighed about the same as four large bags of birdseed.

Actually, less because that would be about 200 lbs and he was well under 200 lbs. But he could shoot and that was a draw.

Fast forward to today though and the kid has gained 50 or 60 lbs - still skinny at 232 but no longer frail - and he’s nearly mastered Tony Bennett’s defense.

And he can still shoot.

He’s a redshirt sophomore, so the ACC will have to deal with him for a while longer. Depending on how much stronger he gets and how much he improves, he may become an NBA target and could conceivably leave early.

It’s a lot of progress for a skinny kid from Durham and we’re pulling for him.

Well, unless he’s playing Duke.
