It’s probably just an oversight.
The annual ACC basketball media guide has a list of every ACC coach’s record from 1954 through the present – all games, regular-season league games and ACC Tournament action. The percentage of wins for each appears in separate columns. But, for whatever reason, coaches aren’t listed in order anywhere solely by winning percentage.
Similarly, the ACC’s postseason notes narrow the grand list of coaching records to the 15 currently active in the conference, along with all sorts of wins and losses but, again, no graphic comparison of how effective they’ve been at winning at their current post and overall.
So, as a public service, we offer the career records of the coaches active in the ACC in 2018-19, ranked by winning percentage overall and at their school.
Note that UNC’s Roy Williams has the best career rate of converting opportunities (games) into successes (victories) across his career (.787), while Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski leads in winning percentage at his present post (.765). Unsurprisingly, the home courts on which both play are named in their honor.
Every active coach except Wake’s Danny Manning, in his sixth year running a program, has a winning career mark overall. All but three holdovers are winners at their current school: Manning, BC’s Jim Christian and Georgia Tech’s Josh Pastner.
Note that coaches who’ve done notably better where they are now versus overall in their careers are Miami’s Jim Larranaga and FSU’s Leonard Hamilton.
