Kenan Controversy Update

At UNC, nothing is more important than athletics.

Not that we have any illusions about this but we would like to point out for the record that we posted 26 days ago about just who UNC’s Kenan Stadium is named for. It’s really rather shocking and if you haven’t read it you might not believe that Kenan is named for a man who machine-gunned African-Americans down in the streets of Wilmington in 1898.

We also pointed out that the protests at UNC over Silent Sam were largely because Julius Carr, for whom Carrboro is named, gave a horrible speech that celebrated horsewhipping a black woman not far from where Silent Sam used to stand.

In Carrboro, there has been some discussion of changing the town’s name but to the best of our knowledge there hasn’t been a single person protesting a football stadium named for a racist mass murderer.

On the other hand, it’s not like tons of people are showing up for UNC football anyway (in fairness though some are surely dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence).
