It’s still a bit early to say, but the state of North Carolina, broadly speaking, is preparing for Armageddon as Hurricane Florence approaches.
According to everything we’ve read, Florence is a highly unusual storm. Storms that come straight across from Africa typically turn north/northeast but another system is preventing that. And there’s a good chance that once it makes landfall it could just stall and dump rain not by the inch but by the foot.
Good news: drought’s over!
Unfortunately for us, it’s currently projected to slam into the Triangle around Friday and we’ve been here before.
When Fran came through in 1996, DBR was a baby website, just getting started.
We lost power for two weeks here.
This one looks like it could be worse, so we’re making plans and trying to figure out how to manage things.
On the bright side, today we have vastly more resources. We can post on Twitter from mobile, assuming the towers stay up, and as power comes back (if we lose it), there’s plenty of WiFi to be had.
There are secondary issues of course, like simple movement. When trees fall in the road, it takes a while to get it all cleared out so that you can get around and when the grid goes down, gas pumps don’t work.
So if we do have major problems we have more ways to keep the site up and we’ll be here. It just may be erratic for a while as we sort things out.
