As the Maryland scandal that is mushrooming after the death of Jordan McNair of heatstroke and allegations of cruelty and abuse, another interesting turn has occurred.
The attorney that Maryland says former A.D. Kevin Anderson hired inappropriately says that actually coach DJ Durkin was the one who hired him to defend two football players accused of sexual assault. He also said the athletic department was a “dysfunctional viper pit.”
We also learn here that Anderson, who went on a mysterious sabbatical before leaving Maryland, was actually told by university president Wallace Loh not to come back to his office.
We haven’t paid close attention to this mess until recently so you may have already heard that former Maryland great Boomer Esiason has called for Loh and current A.D. Damon Evans to resign.
Prominent Maryland alum Scott Van Pelt, who works for ESPN, is more neutral but is also coming to terms with the scandal.
It’s not quite into Len Bias territory yet but it’s threatening to consume the athletic department in a similar way.
