We didn’t get this yet but Mike Krzyzewski and his family have given the Emily K Center a significant endowment: $3 million dollars.

When he announced this Coach K said this:

“It’s ... about making sure this is forever. Basically, if this was a game, we’re winning, we could sit back and I could pull out a cigar and start saying we’ve already won. But this center isn’t about what we’ve done, it’s about what we’re going to do...The resource that’s least developed in our country is the development of opportunities for low-income kids who have enormous talents but not opportunities. We want to develop our resources in Durham and the resources in Durham know no race, no gender, no socio-economic background. It only knows talent, potential and the teamwork necessary to get it done.”

At one point, the Emily K Center was created to honor Coach K’s mother Emily, who was a major inspiration in his life.

Now, though it still honors her, it also honors the bond that the Krzyzewski family has with Durham. They didn’t just come here to coach for a while and leave. The Krzyzewski’s are going to be part of the fabric of Durham for generations - and they’re going to keep making it better.

You can’t really have a much better legacy than that.
