NCAA Basketball: Buffalo at Syracuse

Things haven’t gone well for Danny Manning lately. After making the NCAA tournament last year, his team struggled early and finished just 11-20.

After the season several players departed with Doral Moore and Bryant Crawford applying for the NBA draft. Moore has an agent; Crawford does not and could still return.

Donovan Mitchell,Sam Japhet-Mathias and Rich Washington all left and Keyshawn Woods will finish his career at Ohio State.

That’s a lot of ground to make up.

Wake may have made a dent Wednesday with two grad student transfers: 6-11 Ikenna Smart from Buffalo and 6-2 Torry Johnson from Northern Arizona.

Though his stats are modest, Smart played for a solid program at Buffalo. He can probably contribute and offers some stability and maturity in the post.

Johnson was on a mediocre team with modest stats and he will have to get a sixth year of eligibility to play, having burned five at NAU due to a redshirt and an injury that kept him out for a year.

Still, Wake needs help and needs it now. It’s not a bad gamble under the circumstances.
