A lot of us, meaning fans, don't fully understand how difficult it is to make an NBA team, much less to stay there.

It helps to be a big guy because they’re inherently less common, but even so, the difference between making it and whiffing can be pretty small.

So we might see our guys at Duke or whatever school you might pull for and think, well of course he’s an NBA player.

Well maybe, maybe not. Talent is indispensable but at the highest levels of anything, skills and hard work trump mere talent.

Which brings us to Wendell Carter.

He was somewhat overshadowed at Duke by Marvin Bagley but that kid is the real deal and NBA folks are getting a good idea of just how good he can be.

Apparently - and not surprisingly - he’s made a very good impression. He’s drawn comparisons to Boston’s Al Horford.

Whoever takes him will get more than they ever expected and people are clearly expecting a lot.
