Shane Battier could be on his way home. The Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Battier is being considered for a front office position with the Detroit Pistons. Battier, 39, is being viewed as a possible piece of a revamped Pistons front office, which is making changes in the wake of firing Stan Van Gundy last week as head coach and team president.
Battier has served as the director of basketball development and analytics for the Miami Heat since February 2017, a role that was created to bring him back to the franchise where he won 2 NBA titles with and ended his 13-year playing career in 2014. He also handles community service appearances for the team.
If Battier heads to Detroit, it would be a return to his roots. Battier grew up in suburban Detroit, winning 3 state championships at Detroit Country Day School before heading to become a NCAA champion at Duke.
Battier could have one of his former Duke Blue Devils teammates joining him should he move to Detroit. Brooklyn Nets executive Trajan Langdon is among several names also being considered for roles in the restructured Pistons executive branch.
A player with the mind of Shane Battier should be highly coveted by any team looking to bolster their executive ranks. The Pistons would be wise to find room for him in their board room as they seek to reorganize the franchise and get back to their traditional winning ways.
