No great surprise as Duke’s Trevon Duval joins Marvin Bagley in declaring for the NBA draft.

Bagley is, at worst, a likely top three pick; Duval’s range is much less certain. He could conceivably go in the first round or fall to anywhere in the second.

On the positive side, he has immense physical talent. On the negative side, he was (sort of) demoted as a point guard later in the season. He also didn’t shoot well although that improved somewhat later in the year.

The scouts and executives will also want to thoroughly understand the issue with his left eye.

There’s no doubting his potential though. He could become very, very good.

It’s not clear yet if Duval has an agent (update: he’ll have an agent) but he sounds pretty gone. This is what he said Tuesday: “I loved my time here at Duke and I enjoyed every second of it. I want to thank all of the Duke fans, thank each of my teammates -- they’re all brothers to me -- and each of the coaches that have helped me grow as a young man both on and off the court. I hope to be part of the Duke brotherhood the rest of my life.”
