Oklahoma v Texas
KANSAS CITY, MO - MARCH 10: Head coach Jeff Capel of the Oklahoma Sooners reacts on the sidelines during their quarterfinal game against the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament at Sprint Center on March 10, 2011 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Former Duke assistant Jeff Capel put the finishing touches on his basic staff Monday hiring Milan Brown.

Brown, most recently an assistant at Charleston, also has 12 years of head coaching experience (Mt. St. Mary’s and Holy Cross).

To an extent it tips Capel’s recruiting strategy. As Mike DeCourcy pointed out a while back, Pitt as a Big East team worked New York and the Northeast and he didn’t see a way for Pitt to move beyond that model.

Capel’s already hit the local talents but his staff is ready to recruit the entire East Coast and knows where to go to find players.

We’re not saying that they’re going straight to Lower Richland High or Kinston High or Fayetteville’s 71st, but those guys will know where those schools are and who to talk to first.

Tim O’ Toole will provide expertise north of Maryland and knows New York and New Jersey well. As a matter of fact, in a bit of news sure to please DeCourcy, Capel and O’ Toole are already working the Big Apple market. These guys are well set up to bring talent to Pitt.

This is a small point but small points matter: Capel should ask whoever maintains the Pitt web site to post bios off all the new coaches, including himself. It’s pretty second-rate that that hasn’t been done yet and Capel, clearly, is not interested in second-rate anything.
