Duke basketball has a long and glorious history. Older fans idolize Dick Groat. Art Heyman was the life of the party and a bull in a china shop. Jack Marin was elegant perfection.
In the ‘70s, Tate Armstrong was great on terrible teams. Then came Jim Spanarkel, Mike Gminski, Kenny Dennard and Gene Banks, two of Duke’s greatest bon vivants.
The Krzyzewski era is full of great players. Where do you even start? Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Shane Battier - it would take a while just to get through the retired jerseys.
No one is more respected though than Grant Hill.
After winning two titles at Duke, he was off to a brilliant NBA career before injuries wrecked his career and nearly cost him his life.
Yet he came back from that and re-established a solid late career. He spent 19 years in the league and though he could not regain his former greatness, he earned a level of respect that few will ever have.
That’s just Grant.
And for that, for his talent and perhaps more for his character, Hill will be named to the the Hall of Fame Saturday afternoon. We can’t think of anyone more deserving.
