After Duke beat Texas Tech in the Garden Thursday, former Duke great Kenny Dennard posted something provocative on his Facebook page:
“Tre Jones is the best defensive point guard Duke has ever had!”
That’s saying a lot, and after just 12 games. In Dennard’s eyes, Jones is a better defender than Tommy Amaker, Bobby Hurley, Steve Wojciechowski and Chris Duhon.
Is he right?
Well, he could be. Dog is much better qualified to analyze something like that than we are.
For our part, we think it’s a provocative argument but you have to wait and make it after his time at Duke is done.
There’s no question that Jones is very, very good on the defensive end, a point Coach K made sure to acknowledge after the win over Texas Tech:
“Tre was the key to the game. He just turned it around for us with six steals, usually he’s not looked for a shot, he willed balls in, and all of our guys just fed off of that. It was magnificent to see. He did a hell of a job, and as good on the ball as we’ve had, right with [Tommy] Amaker, [Bobby] Hurley, Wojo, [Chris] Duhon, he’s right there, and tonight, maybe better.”
It’s still early for this kind of conversation, but with that sort of admiration from people who have a high level of understanding of the game, by the end of the year, Jones may be in the running for National Defensive Player of the Year.
