After Duke’s sensational outing against Kentucky, the starters got most of the attention. Truth is though every team needs someone who is willing to do whatever needs to get done. In a short story by one of our favorite writers, a boy’s father advises him to farm saying bluntly “somebody’s got to dig in the damn dirt.”
Mark Cuban put it differently when former NC State star Adam Harrington was briefly a Dallas Maverick, saying “they guys like him and someone has to get the doughnuts.”
Both statements focus on the same idea and that’s that most people just get to work hard and do their best. Not everyone can be a superstar.
On Duke, one of the guys who bets fits that bill is Jack White.
The Aussie import didn’t play a lot his first year but he showed last year that he was capable and this year he’s proving that he can be more than just a glue guy. Captain Jack came off the bench against Kentucky and was superb. He was a better rebounder than any of UK’s vaunted big men and while he has said that being on the team is more important to him than being a star, he played just about as well as his more celebrated teammates.
There will come a time this year when one of the starters struggles and his worth will become very clear.
Captain Jack is a much better player than people realize. We’ll see soon enough.
