ACC Roundup: A Good First Night

Given the late finish of the Duke-Kentucky game, this will be a brief ACC Roundup. Every team in the league won by at least double digits, with the closest being UNC’s 78-67 win at Wofford, where Kenny Williams didn’t score but held Fletcher McGee to 21 points. That may not sound that impressive but the guy is a serious scorer and UNC got some payback for last year’s shocking upset in Chapel Hill.

NC State rode a big night from Torin Dorn (28 points) to a 105-55 win over Mt. St. Mary’s. It’s not a great opponent but State still did have a solid start to the season.

Virginia beat Towson by 29 to start the redemption season after last spring’s enormous upset by UMBC. De’Andre Hunter, who missed that game, had 13 points and 10 boards. Ty Jerome tossed in 20 as well.

Jeff Capel had a nice debut with Pitt, winning 69-53 over Youngstown State. He has a lot of young players but got good games out of his guards. Freshmen Xavier Johnson had 16 points, six assists and five rebounds and fellow frosh Trey McGowens knocked in 17.

All in all it was a very promising debut for the Panthers. There’s a lot of work to do but everyone seems to be buying in.

Finally, Florida State had the nerve to open against Florida and just kicked the Gators all night, winning 81-60. PJ Savoy led the way with 20 points. FSU also had nine steals and limited Florida to 19-53 from the floor. Very promising debut.
