In ACC news, Clemson has lost AJ Oliver to transfer. No particular reason has been mentioned that we’re aware of but his mother, who was the Clemson coach, was fired in March and that may have something to do with it. It doesn’t seem like a terrible blow to the team though. They also picked up a potential replacement.
Miami, having seemingly emerged from the Adidas trial/scandal unaffected, is ready to embrace the trends of the game. Apparently even Dewan Hernandez, previously known as Dewan Huell, is hitting threes. Sounds like fun from Coral Gables.
In Charlottesville, Virginia says it’s in a good spot and after last year’s shocking upset to #16 seed UMBC, is seen by many as a Final Four favorite. Keep in mind that the Cavs were missing highly athletic De’Andre Hunter, out with an injury, and will have Alabama transfer Braxton Key. This team has size, athleticism, depth, experience and great guard play and are obviously well coached. They still have to prove they can do it, but certainly UMBC is motivation. Note to ACC hosts: taunting Virginia on that game might well backfire.
UNC played an exhibition vs. Mount Olive Friday night and won by 43 - no great surprise obviously. Ol’ Roy Williams tinkered with his lineup extensively. Up on the 6th for UNC - a rematch with Wofford, at Wofford.
You’ll recall the Terriers upset UNC last season which was a bigger upset than UMBC vs. UVA because those two were at least NCAA teams.
Wake Forest beat Belmont Abbey (Al McGuire’s old team) by a nearly identical score and margin. Freshman Jaylen Hoard had 19 points and nine rebounds.
Fellow freshman Isaiah Mucius added 17.
