This was inevitable and in the big scheme of things it’s not that important, but for basketball people it’s too bad: the Paradise Jam, a fun tournament that’s been held annually for 17 years on St. Thomas, will have to relocate this year after Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria roared through the islands recently.
The organizers have asked the schools to submit proposals for alternate venues.
Wake Forest, who will participate, could offer up Lawrence Joel arena or possibly work a deal with the Greensboro Coliseum which might like to add an event, or maybe both.
Greensboro has some events scheduled during the Jam dates but things could be moved and if you use Joel as well, then you have flexibility.
It’s all trivial to the people who live there obviously. Some of the islands will have to be massively rebuilt, including St. Thomas, St. Croix and Puerto Rico, so basketball is pretty far down the list of priorities.
We’re sure someone has already thought of this but might as well use the relocated event as a fundraiser for those affected in the Caribbean.
