Virginia Tech v Duke
DURHAM, NC - NOVEMBER 05: Head coach David Cutcliffe of the Duke Blue Devils leads his team onto the field prior to their game against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 5, 2016 in Durham, North Carolina. Virginia Tech defeated Duke 24-21.

David Cutcliffe has completely changed Duke football and nowhere is that more true than in how he’s approached recruiting.

He’s managed to sell Duke academics which has always been hard in football, and he’s recruiting like an SEC program, emphasizing speed whenever possible.

He’s also made it a point to recruit in North Carolina, not some place Duke has always emphasized but every program wants to do well at home.

So after a one-year hiatus, that continues this season. Duke has gotten commitments from five in-state players:

  • Quarterback Gunnar Holmberg/Wake Forest (who doesn’t love a QB named Gunnar?)
  • Tight end Zamari White/Henderson
  • Wide receiver Jarett Garner/ Harrisburg
  • Offensive guard Maurice McIntyre/Jacksonville

And number five?

Cornerback Nate Thompson from Sanford’s Southern Lee High, who picked Duke over N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Syracuse and South Carolina.

It’s all a sign of just how dramatically Cutcliffe has changed the culture of Duke football.
