It’s remarkable that Dennis Smith got through NC State and the ACC media without a story like this being written about him.
Or maybe he did. We never saw it if so and it was never really discussed that we’re aware of.
It talks about his family and how he was raised by his father after his mother, for whatever reason (no one wants to talk about it) left the family.
For convenience, we tend to drop Juniors here. Everyone knows who Smith is, or Wendell Carter or Gary Trent, for that matter. But in his case, Smith makes sure that everyone calls him Junior because of the debt he owes his father.
The best character here though is his grandmother. She’s a real pistol.
A life-long Redskins fan, she wasn’t very happy when Smith said he’d start pulling for the Dallas Cowboys and expressed herself accordingly.
She’s a blast. Dallas owner Mark Cuban should figure out a way to incorporate her into the team. Even from this far out she’s an obvious asset.
All in all, this is a really great piece about a player who, despite his talent, managed to remain fairly unknown during his time at State.
