Arieal Scott’s Story Will Sadden And Inspire You

It’s entirely possible that Duke will be getting a player as tough-minded as Christian Laettner. Not much is going to intimidate this recruit, not after what she’s been through already.

NCAA Womens Basketball: ACC Conference Tournament-Notre Dame vs Duke
Duke Blue Devils head coach Joanne P. McCallie may have found one of the toughest kids she’ll ever get.
Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

One of Coach P’s recruits is named Arieal Scott. She’s a 5-10 guard out of Illinois.

She and two sisters went through horrible abuse at the hands of their mother.

Her aunt, who is apparently one of those people you come across from time to time who astonishes you with the size and depth of her heart, did everything she could to help her nieces before ultimately taking them in (we’re pretty sure she would’ve done it earlier but the courts made it difficult).

Duke has had some remarkable parents over the years on both the men’s and women’s sides. We expect Scott’s will join that list.

There is a real sadness at the heart of Scott’s story but the ultimate lesson is one of toughness, overcoming, triumph and love.

Clearly there aren’t enough women like her aunt for all the kids who need someone like that. How wonderful for Scott and her sisters that they had one.
