Vince Taylor is one of Duke’ least appreciated stars. He was recruited by Bill Foster as Jim Spanarkel’s replacement and he actually handled that very well. Spanarkel was an easy guy to replace.
Among other distinctions, he was Duke’s second recruit from Lexington (following Jeff Mullins) which has to count for something.
He went on to a long career as an assistant coach, working for Pitt, Wyoming, Louisville, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Texas Tech.
Now he’ll be working for fellow Duke alum Johnny Dawkins at Central Florida.
He tells the Orlando Sentinel that “I’m truly excited to have this opportunity. Johnny Dawkins embodies what is good about college basketball and I can’t wait to work with him every day. The chance to come to UCF at this time is special. The pieces are here and we’re just going to coach these guys up to take it to the next level. I’ve worked under some great coaches and that is no different here. This staff has done a great job in just one year and I’m just excited to keep that going.”
He’ll have a unique career opportunity there immediately, working with 7-6 Tacko Fall.
