As you probably know, Chase Jeter, who decided to leave Duke after his sophomore year, has chosen Arizona.
He said he wants to be closer to his hometown of Las Vegas and Arizona should have some minutes when he’s eligible.
He might not remember this but his dad, Chris, would: when Lute Olson and Jerry Tarkanian were coaching the two desert schools, things got very ugly for a while.
Tark was fond of calling Olson “Midnight Luther” because he felt Lute, somehow, could swoop in at the last hour and steal a recruit.
After one intense game in Vegas, a Tucson columnist basically lied about events following the game. Ultimately, one “fan” - we can’t remember from which school now - threatened to stuff a cactus in a player’s mouth.
Death threats make rivalries tough, so the teams took a few years off. Now it’s probably mostly forgotten. But it got very ugly for a time.
Anyway, Jeter’s hometown paper, the Las Vegas Sun, has a column up on his move to Tucson. We really hope he does great out there. He’s an easy guy to pull for.
