ACC, Notre Dame Re-Up For Football

Living together has worked fairly well but it’d be nice to make things more formal.

NCAA Football: Duke at Notre Dame
Sep 24, 2016; South Bend, IN, USA; Duke Blue Devils cornerback Breon Borders (31) and linebacker Ben Humphreys (34) celebrate as time runs out in the fourth quarter against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium. Duke won 38-35.
Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday, the ACC and Notre Dame announced an extension of their football agreement. It’ll now run through 2037.

As the N&O’s Joe Giglio points out, Notre Dame has no incentive currently to join a conference full time (the Irish are contractually obligated to join the ACC for football if they choose any conference) but that could change if the playoffs are restricted to conference champions.

However, the odds of the SEC and the Big Ten going along with that seem pretty minimal so don't hold your breath. The Big Ten, remember, approached Maryland partly because they felt the ACC had encroached on their turf by inviting the Irish.

What is more likely is that digital media continues to reshape the landscape and media rights. That’s where you should look for that sort of change. Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Netflix are the players who have big money to throw at programming or, for that matter, for purchasing a network or its contractual assets.
