Duke had to work hard this year to make a bowl game after missing last year. The Blue Devils dropped half of the season in a losing streak that it only broke in the final two games.
The Blue Devils will take on 8-4 Northern Illinois in the Quick Lane Bowl on December 26th.
If Northern Illinois rings a bell it may be due to NC State coach dour Dave Doeren who turned in a superb two-year stretch there.
His former assistant Rod Carey has had the job for the last six years and has averaged 7.3 wins.
Before Doeren, Jerry Kill did well too.
It’s a solid program in other words. Any college sports fan should be aware that the MAC is tough in both basketball and football. Certainly it won’t be an easy game for Duke. NIU knocked off Nebraska this season if you didn’t know.
Win or lose though, this makes five out of the last six years that Duke has made a bowl game. Wake Forest didn't do that. UNC didn’t do that.
And Duke has done it the right way.
