The Greensboro paper has an article up on how Marvin Bagley and his parents decided to reclassify.
As several people say here, this happens a lot (and both up and down - people move down to gain an advantage later). Bagley’s drew extra attention because of how good he is, but it’s not really unusual.
Some of the courses he took were probably challenging too - Algebra and Latin to name a couple (Durum est Dudus Latine condemnabitur!)
The bottom line though is Duke admissions. We hear about the few athletes they admit each year but not the many more they decline. We think it’s safe to say that Christoph Guttentag has worked with various coaches, but he’s no pushover. He had to be convinced to take Sean Dockery for instance.
