Duke visits Wake Forest on Saturday for a challenging season finale in an attempt to pick up a 6th win.
It is possible that Duke may get a bid at 5-7, due to recent increase in bowls, but to be safe it is reasonable to assume they will try to win to guarantee a bid.
Wake sits at 7-4 (4-3), including three of their last four over #19 NC State, Syracuse, and Louisville. John Wolford is an excellent dual-threat QB for the Deacons, who have finally turned the corner after a few years of poor football.
Duke is coming off a 43-20 win over Georgia Tech that snapped a 6-game losing streak and featured a run-heavy offense that put up its best numbers against FBS competition this year.
It appears the coaching staff has finally clued into the high levels of success that Duke has had running the ball this season: Brittain Brown had 14 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown, while Shaun Wilson added 11 carries and 73 yard.
This balance of offense appears to have helped Daniel Jones, who threw two TDs and no picks on 18/26 accuracy, and added 91 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
The defense survived the loss of Ben Humphreys and Jeremy McDuffie as Marquis Waters and Joe-Giles Harris each stepped up, combining for 25 tackles. They will have to contain John Wolford to give Duke a chance, as it will take more than one week of high scoring to inspire confidence in Duke’s ability to win a shootout, but now there’s some momentum and positivity around the team that the offense might not waste another great day of defense.
