Break up the Deacs! Wake Forest finally won a game after losing three straight to open the season.
The Demon Deacons had a 22 point first-half lead and defeated Quinnipiac 72-55.
Wake Forest held the Bobcats to 28.8% from the floor and 28.6% from three point range, perhaps easing coach Danny Manning’s angst about that end of the court.
They certainly didn’t win this game on offense. Wake shot 41.7% overall and from three point range.
There was also a bit of imbalance as Bryant Crawford and Chawndee Brown combined to take 34 of Wake’s 60 attempts, but a win is a win is a win.
Wake now gets six days off to prepare for Kelvin Sampson’s Houston.
Incidentally, Quinnipiac is coached by Baker Dunleavy, Mike’s little brother. He’s two games into his head coaching career.
Texas Tech pounded BC inside, outscoring the Eagles 42-28 in the paint. Combine that with 18 turnovers and that’s a formula for losing.
Jerome Robinson isn’t playing very well lately: his last game he shot 1-14. Against Texas Tech he had 10 points and fouled out. He also had four of those turnovers.
Grad student transfer Deontae Hawkins had five himself.
Up at Syracuse, Tyus Battle is off to a solid start. Against Cornell he had 18; against Iona 28 and against Texas Southern he had 21.
He’s shooting 51.5% overall and 33.3% from there point range.
Point guard Frank Howard says he knows what to do when Battle hits a shot: "I get it right back to him.''
It wasn’t a great game for Syracuse - Texas Southern hung in until Battle ran off 16 points in the first ten minutes of the second half. Syracuse may have some issues but Battle isn’t one of them.
On Sunday, King Rice brings his Monmouth team to Virginia. Bad news: in three games, Monmouth has 61 turnovers.
The other interesting game is Clemson and Temple. For both teams it would help an eventual case to make the NCAA field.
