That didn’t take long: 6-5 Alex O’ Connell committed to Duke on Friday. The 4-star guard said Duke “checked all the boxes.”
As we mentioned earlier, Duke had an O’ Connell previously: Dave, who was an early 70’s Blue Devil.
He was at Duke from 1973-76, which means he would’ve been recruited by by Bucky Waters and we think played the last year of freshman basketball, then suited up for Neil McGeachy for one year before finishing up under Bill Foster (it’s the kind of thing Al Featherston would have at his fingertips).
He didn’t play a whole lot at Duke because, despite some nice talent, he had terrible luck with injuries. He only played in 62 games, scoring 183 career points.
This article describes him as “hyper athletic” and even in his senior year, after multiple knee injuries, he could still get up.
In the same article, Alex describes himself somewhat similarly: “I'm really athletic. I'm really bouncy. Surprisingly though. I can finish above the rim, if necessary.”
There’s more video there as well.
In other recruiting news, 6-7 Jordan Tucker says he’s about to cut his list but he’s wait on an offer from Duke first. He’s visiting next weekend.
