According to ESPN, Derryck Thornton is planning to transfer. To an extent it's understandable, but he was playing and would have improved a great deal between now and next season.

We admire his defense a lot. He really puts himself out there defensively. If he has had a problem, it's been decision making on offense.

That's not uncommon for a freshman of course. Bobby Hurley went through it. So did most freshmen point guards. It's a tough position and Duke asks a lot of point guards.

Still, he averaged 26.2 mpg, so it's not like he's not getting on the court. And lately we've wondered about some of the guys who transferred because if they had been patient, they would have found big roles later.

It's his life of course, so while Duke fans may miss him, we hope he's happy wherever he goes from here. We've enjoyed watching him and he seems like a promising guy in many respects, not just basketball.
