Miami did Duke a nice turn, beating Notre Dame at Notre Dame, 68-50. Obviously they're capable of winning an ACC road game, but by that much over a solid Irish team?
Notre Dame's not exactly on fire right now, but by 18? We didn't see it coming.
The Irish shot just 34% and just 18.8% from long range and got just 11 points from Mike Brey's starting backcourt (Demetrius Jackson and Steve Vasturia combined to shoot 3-22. All three were by Jackson).
When asked what was going on, Mike Brey said "I have absolutely no freakin’ idea right now. I am going to spend a lot of time tonight and tomorrow. I told my guys, ‘I’ve got to try and figure out how to help you.’"
If you want to take an early flyer on a good NCAA run, you could do worse than Miami. That's an experienced, talented and well-coached team.
After the big win over Duke, Pitt had a devastating loss to Virginia Tech, falling 65-61. The Hokies, now 17-13, have earned respect, but Pitt treated Duke like the final number on an NCAA lottery ticket. Then this? It could be a terrible letdown if it ends up keeping the Panthers out of the tournament.
Pitt didn't shoot much better than Notre Dame, hitting 38.9% from the floor and 14.3% from deep.
For the Hokies, Zach LeDay had 20 points and 10 boards. Seth Allen added 10.
Notre Dame and Pitt both suffered tough losses, but no one had as devastating a loss as BC.
The Eagles were set to win their first game of the ACC season. They were sooooo close. State lost the ball out of bounds with just :01.1. left on the clock. State ran Maverick Rowan down the middle and he got a chippy as time expired.
The looks on the faces of the BC kids were heartbreaking. We're not sure we've ever felt worse for any team.
BC did everything they needed to do to win except for defending the last play. With the loss, BC falls to 0-17. Their last chance to win comes Saturday at Clemson.
Louisville closes out the season Saturday at Virginia - with its self-imposed ban, there is no post-season for the Cards.
However Louisville will win ACC hip-hop honors: he released a song Wednesday called "For the Ville." By the way, if Duke ends up in 5th place, the Blue Devils will get a quick rematch with Wake Forest.
