After what seems a long wait, ACC play is here.

Conference play begins with two really interesting games.

First there’s Wake at Florida State. FSU is off to its best-ever start and is playing good defense again. Wake is talented but young and callow. Can the Deacs handle it? It’s a good road test.

Keep an eye on Bryant Crawford. The talented sophomore is cocky but fragile. When he toughens up so will Wake Forest.

In the second exciting game, Virginia and Louisville tangle.

The funniest thing about UVA is when they really break a team defensively the photos are amazing. When Virginia played Harvard a while back one of the Harvard kids looked like he was about to have a mental breakdown. Last year’s photos of Rick Pitino showed an ashen-faced man in total disbelief.

You can count on a revenge motive this one and Virginia is a bit off of where it was last year. Playing at Louisville won’t be easy.

There are a few boring games on the schedule - barring upsets, who cares about Columbia-Miami, Rider-State, Marshall-Pitt, UMBC-Virginia Tech or St. Peters-Notre Dame?

However, the other two games are very interesting.

UNC-Wilmington is playing very well and Clemson better not sleep on Brad Brownell’s old program. The Seahawks are capable.

And in Chapel Hill, King Rice returns.

The former point guard and Bobby Hurley tormenter, Rice had some rough times including a bout with alcoholism. He seems to have put that behind him and led Monmouth to a 28-win season last year.

UNC will almost certainly win but you could consider it an audition for a possible eventual return to Chapel Hill. He’s been that impressive.
