Clemson gave all but that wasn't enough to beat Alabama in the football national championship.

The Tigers showed a lot of heart and represented the ACC well. We wish they could have pulled it off, but Alabama was better and is a deserving champion.

Tuesday night's game between Virginia and visiting Miami is one of those fascinating flex points we see periodically in athletic competition.

Three straight losses would be really bad for Virginia, a team that not too long ago looked like one of the best teams in the country.

A loss would pus the 'Hoos down to 11th place.

That would most likely be temporary, but still: who'd a thunk it?

Meanwhile, Miami, ably coached by former Terry Holland assistant Jim Larranaga, is surging. The Florida State win was nearly a tour de force, and even though it was against a team that's not playing very well, Miami is a very confident group.

Despair vs. sleek arrival: something has to give. Big drama coming up!

Miami will also arrive as the higher rated team now: in the new polls, Miami is #8 AP and #9 in the coaches poll.

The rest of the ACC sees UNC at #5/5, Duke at #9/6, UVA at #13/11, Pitt at #20/17 and Louisville at #21/20.

Here's a minor earthquake: the ACC will allow alcohol sales at the basketball and baseball tournaments. Not too long ago, in relative terms, you had to bring your own bottle to restaurants. We're sure there are plenty of people who still feel strongly that alcohol is a sin and should be nowhere near college sports.

We're not one of them, but we do feel strongly that eventually this could prove to be a very bad decision. It wouldn't surprise us to see something happen at a Maryland game (Maryland also now has alcohol sales) or a few other places which have historically had bad crowd control.
