NCAA: Boeheim Suspended, Scholarships Reduced

In a somewhat rare move, the NCAA suspended Jim Boeheim for nine conference games. Syracuse has also lost a number of scholarships and has to pay back Big East revenues from three seasons.

Jim Boeheim's career and reputation likely took a big hit Friday as the NCAA released the long-awaited report on Syracuse.

The NCAA hit Syracuse pretty hardin its report on the program. Jim Boeheim is being held responsible and will be suspended for nine ACC games.

Syracuse also loses 12 scholarships over the next four seasons, has to pay back Big East NCAA tournament revenues from three seasons and will forfeit wins from 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12.

None of it's good, but losing what amounts to three scholarships a year for four seasons is a serious penalty. You are only allowed to carry 13.

Syracuse also ran drug tests and then ignored positive results. We haven't plowed through the whole report, but it appears that there was an account run out of a local YMCA which used around $300,000 of uncertainly raised money to pay various parties involved in this.

It's a pretty harsh penalty. Football got hit as well.
