According to Shaquille O' Neal, he was very close to signing when he visited UNC, but there was one thing which dissuaded him:
Matt Wenstrom.
Wenstrom, who was also from Texas, had already picked the Heels, and amazingly, in retrospect, that was enough to keep Shaquille from choosing UNC.
Instead he went to LSU where he competed instead with Stanley Roberts, a much better big man.
Go figure.
