In-Season Tournament Participation by ACC Teams

Some ACC teams play the opening rounds on their own campuses, games that have no impact on who makes it to the championship rounds. Others play every game at a neutral site.

Some pre-determine most, if not all, of the matchups. Others allow wins and losses to scramble the field.

Some schedule games on consecutive days. Others employ separate dates, separate weeks, and multiple locales.

Some play at exotic neutral sites. Others, not so much.

In-season fall tournaments are not only a fixture in college basketball, but have become quite ubiquitous. By the end of November, all but Pittsburgh among the ACC’s 15 basketball teams will have participated in one.

The oddest format is offered by the Wooden Legacy, which involves three games in four days at two locations in Orange County, California -- first at Titan Gym at Cal-State Fullerton, then at Anaheim’s Honda Center. Participant Boston College also plays what is called "a non-bracketed game" of the Wooden Legacy at Providence, Rhode Island, 10 days after the event’s championship is settled.

This year there are five Classics, three Invitationals and two Tip-Offs involving ACC teams. In case you’re counting.

Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and Barclays Center in Brooklyn each host two events.

So far Florida State lost to Hofstra to open the Paradise Jam. Duke, Miami and Virginia reach the finals of their events today in New York, San Juan, and Charleston, S.C, respectively.
