Devastating ECU Loss - What Happens After That?

Because something has to happen when your defense allows 70 points.

East Carolina Pirates quarterback Kurt Benkert (6) carries the ball for a touchdown against the North Carolina Tar Heels during the 4th quarter at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. The East Carolina Pirates defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 70-41.

Wow: 70-41. That's going to haunt UNC football in the same way as 41-0 does, only worse in some ways.

The Duke loss was to Steve Spurrier's best team there, and it was a rivalry game.

ECU? That's a different sort of rivalry.

Remember when the legislature forced UNC and State to schedule ECU? UNC wants no part of this "rivalry." Tar Heel faithful would be very happy to leave ECU in Greenville forever, and that was before this game.

Just look at the astounding stats: the Pirates had 789 yards total. ECU had an amazing 7.9 yards per rush. And in spite of total dominance offensively - who scores 41 points and gets outscored by 29? - ECU only had the ball 10 minutes more than did UNC.

Four times ECU scored in less than a minute.

Keep in mind that this came after a week off for UNC.

It's a humiliating loss and when you stack it on top of last year's 55-31 loss, ECU has outscored UNC 125-72 in a pair of stunning beat-downs.

Here's what else it does: it raises questions about Larry Fedora's job, which means that defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will go first. If he gets fired Monday morning, it won't be the first time that a D.C. walks the plank for the team.

Is it that bad? That depends on a minimum of two things: first, the relationship between Fedora and his coordinator. And second, the fan reaction. It's not going to be pretty. If it's really bad, Koenning will be the scapegoat.
