This is pretty great news - Dean Smith will get the Presidential Medal Of Freedom, no doubt for his efforts to help integrate North Carolina in the 1960s. Smith was a leading figure in desegregating this state and was principled and courageous. It's very much deserved.

Given his health, we're not sure if he'll fully appreciate it, but his family will and UNC fans, who have not had much to be proud of lately, can surely take great pride in this as well. So can Duke and State fans and all North Carolinians.
