There's been a lot of discussion lately about professional gay athletes coming out (well, male professional athletes anyway), but the NBA's Jason Collins is the first to actually do it.
He seems like a strong guy but the NBA is not a great place to be gay. He's currently a free agent, which may make it tougher to find a team - had he announced while still on a team, at least he'd be under contract. Individual prejudices and cultural biases may now be part of the equation for him.
Still, times are changing and he may find much more support than he ever imagined, both in the locker room and in the stands. We'd like to think so.
Most interesting detail in some ways: his twin brother Jarron, also an NBA vet, had no clue whatsoever. As Jason says, "so much for twin telepathy."
