When Johnny Dawkins, whose basketball identity rotated around D.C. and the ACC, took the Stanford job, one of his first and smartest moves was to hire former Santa Clara coach Dick Davey to assist him and to, more or less, teach him how to get around on the West Coast and where to find recruits.
Things have worked out well to date: the Cardinal won 26 games last season and are seen as a program on the rise.
At 70, though, Davey has had enough and retired. So Dawkins has replaced him with former Stanford star Mark "Mad Dog" Madsen, who will be working primarily with the big men.
