Not being Auburn fans, we didn't follow the story of Harvey Updyke closely, other than to have the general impression that anyone who would poison trees over a football rivalry is just an unbelievable idiot.
He more or less verified that when he confessed in the halls of the courthouse during jury selection - to a reporter. Apparently he concluded that he'd be convicted anyway, that he couldn't get a fair trial, so what difference did it make?
Stupid, apparently, is a lifetime condition.
