We were really sorry to hear that Dr. Leroy Walker has died. You didn't have to spend much time in Durham to realize that he cast a huge shadow. Maybe Coach K's is bigger; maybe Wallace Wade's back in the day. Maybe.
Maybe not, too. He was a remarkable, highly accomplished man who helped an enormous number of people. Anyone would have been thrilled to have known him and anyone would have benefited. We wish he had. It's tempting to say that Durham is a poorer place without him, but of course Durham benefited hugely from his presence here.
On a side note, isn't it time for a serious book about NCCU athletics? We don't know a whole lot, but any school that can claim Walker, John McClellan and Sam Jones has a rich history.
