So it's official now: Larry Brown is the head man at SMU. They're moving up to the Big East and they've done the basketball equivalent of lawyering up.
Brown is the equal of anyone in the Big East as a coach. The only guys who can even approximate his level are Rick Pitino, Jim Calhoun and Jim Boeheim. Pitino is the only guy who has been in the NBA, where he had some success with the Knicks before bombing with the Celtics.
Still, Brown, who says he's always seen himself as a college coach despite not coaching in college since 1988, has a lot to prove. Commitment has never been his strong suit, and at 71, his career can't go on indefinitely.
It's going to be fascinating to watch how this evolves, that's for sure. Brown could leave this summer for a pro job - he did that to Davidson after having that job for just one month - or could he conceivably find happiness and stability at long last?
