Barely three weeks into the 2012-13 basketball season both Duke's men and women remain undefeated. Mike Krzyzewski's men are 8-0 and Joanne McCallie's women are 6-0.
Both are ranked in the top five nationally.
The only other ACC men's team that remains undefeated is Virginia Tech at 8-0, unless you care to count Syracuse, which we don't. (The Orange are 5-0 pending a game on Monday night against Eastern Michigan.)
On the women's side, 7-0 Florida State is the sole ACC club besides Duke to maintain an unblemished record to this point. That's unless you want to count 5-0 Notre Dame, which we don't. (The Fighting Irish host Baylor on Dec. 5.)
Duke's men go for their ninth win against Temple on Dec. 8 in East Rutherford, N.J. The Owls are undefeated, with a game at Villanova coming up prior to facing the Blue Devils.
Mike Krzyzewski's Duke squads won nine or more contests to open a season 14 times in the past 30 years.
Following Temple the Devils close out the 2012 calendar year with home games against overmatched Cornell, Elon, and Santa Clara.
The Duke women next face Georgia Tech on Dec. 6 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke's teams got off to their best simultaneous starts in 2006, when the women won 20 to open the season and the men won 17. Next-best was 2003 when the women again were victorious in their first 20 games while the men won their first dozen.
