Barry Jacobs On Presidential Elections & ACC Basketball

You've probably noticed a presidential election was held recently.

We wondered if we could deduce any parallels between the historical fates of ACC men's programs and those of Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. Our examination of team records is limited to conference play, where the results are minimally skewed by schedule manipulation.

Republicans won eight of the 15 presidential elections since the ACC began - 1956, 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2004. Democrats obviously won the others - 1960, 1964, 1976, 1992, 1996, and of course 2008 and 2012 by Barack Obama.

Democratic success doesn't bode well for the popular media pick for 2012-13 ACC supremacy. When Democrats capture the White House, the Wolfpack has been 1-5. When Republicans succeed, N.C. State usually prospers (5-2-1).

A Democrat never won the presidency in a season when UVa had a winning ACC record. Or, to put it another way, the Cavaliers haven't posted a winning record yet in a season that began with a Democratic victory. Interestingly, Obama is the first Democrat since Franklin Roosevelt, who governed long before the advent of the ACC, to carry Virginia twice.

Duke, Maryland and North Carolina have winning records when Republicans win; the Blue Devils and Tar Heels also are the only schools that have winning records when Democrats win. No big surprise there.
